Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

So I, like a relatively normal teenager, find myself surfing the interwebs. I find this beautiful thing called 'Booktube' about six months ago and after watching for sometime I hear a certain Booktuber bring up this series. The booktuber's username is PeruseProject you should go check her out she's awesome and just yeah. I keep a mental note that I want to see about this series the next time I'm at the public library. I go, I get it, I read it (in eight hours) and fall in love with it. This book is everything I've ever wanted in a fantasy series for YA. If you want to get into fantasy and you don't want something too heavy like Game of Thrones, try this because you will seriously love it.

The writing is FANTASTIC. Sarah J. Maas is an amazing writer and I bow down to this woman. I think she's awesome and has a true talent for the writing word. Okay, enough about my fangirling let's get onto the review.

Basically, the story is about this female assassin named Celaena Sardothien who is at this slave encampment called Endovier and she is summoned by the king of Adarlan to take part in this champoinship to become his personal assassin for all the kingdom's dirty work basically. She agrees to participate in exchange for only working for the king for four years before earning her freedom, not the original six years his son, Prince Dorian Havillard, offered. Long story short she wins. There you go.

She wins and throughout this whole book there's this subplot of champions being killed by this mysterious force type thing it's executed very well. I didn't think that one plot tried to overpower the other and it was very well balanced. Also the "spirit" I suppose you could say of an age old queen named Elena basically "haunts" Celaena and warns her about bad things to come.

This book didn't end with a cliffhanger but it also definitely didn't feel like the end of a stand alone. It gave us a lot of world building and I was so excited to start its sequel Crown of Midnight. I can't say enough good things about this book. It is awesome and the writing is superb. I felt like she kept the suspense at a minimum but I liked that! It was so refreshing to see a book where the obvious was still kept in the dark with frustrating suspense that didn't need to be there. She left me wanting to know more about Celaena's past but didn't make her backstory super obvious that I just wanted to know how she would let it play out.

All in all I gave this book five stars on Goodreads and you guys should seriously check it out.

You guys can buy it from Amazon here, from the Book Depository here, and Barnes and Noble here.

  2. So as I usually find myself stating, books really need to start reading themselves. With college comes a lot of responsibilities (oh like how I went all Spider Man on you there guys) but at the same time, I'm finding I have a lot more free time to read. I then, however, tell myself that I need to add more and more books to my 'To Be Read' list. And so this happened.

First up is Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas. I'm not going to say too too much about this book since it is a sequel to an ongoing series but basically it's about a female assassin and awesome stuff like that. I powered through Throne of Glass and am really loving the new dynamic Crown of Midnight has created. And the world building, goodness me, the world building is fantastic. Okay I'm going to move onto the next book before I spoil the whole series.

Now we have Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I'm about 200 pages in and I'm loving every word of it. Being a freshman in college like Cath, I connect to her already just with that. I also write fanfiction and fangirl and do a lot of the things Cath says she does. I think she's pretty freaking fantastic and seriously relateable. And LEVI. Can I just have Levi for Christmas this year? I want a hot lanky guy that will listen/read my fanfiction! He's so supportive I just want him to be real. So yes, I'm thinking I'll be doing a review of this pretty soon and hopefully reading other books by Rainbow Rowell since this is my first.

Next is the Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson. I have read this book the least. I'm only about sixty pages in and I'm liking it well enough. It's basically about a girl who runs away on her wedding day and the prince she was supposed to marry as well as an assassin who is hired to kill her. I do have one question that may be explained further in the book, why on Earth would there be an assassin hired to kill her if it was known that the prince/fiance was already on his way to try and bring her back? I DON'T UNDERSTAND. Oh well, maybe once I get more into it they'll tell me but for now I'll be confused. I must say I adore the writing; first person is one of my absolute favorite point of views to read in fiction and Mary Pearson is on point.

Now is The Clockwork Scarab by Colleen Gleason. I picked this up back in high school from my school's library and unfortunately could not finish it before I had to return it. I loved it when I was reading it and wanted to buy it but it, at the time, was an absolute bear to find. My Barnes and Noble would always say it had it in stock, I'd make the ten minute drive and guess what, nope don't have it. This happened on three separate occasions so I just gave up. Also, amazon had it for a stupid expensive price and I didn't know what the Book Depository was until recently. Now I have it from my local library (good job, why didn't you think to look there six months ago, Marisa) and am wanting to pick up where I have left off but I want to finish some other books first.

Can I just say that this cover for Jane Eyre that I just found is BEYOND GORGEOUS. Ugh the Penguin Drop Caps redone covers are to die for (I'm currently drooling over the one for Pride and Prejudice) and so I figured I'd give you guys something pretty to look at while you read my rambling. So Jane Eyre by Charolotte Bronte. I have heard nothing but good things about this classic and it sounds right up my alley also I really want to watch the Michael Fassbender movie of this and told myself I couldn't until I read the book. I picked up a used copy at my local book store for like $1.00 just in case I was like some weird alien who didn't like this book. So I shall tell you all how I feel about it in my wrap up!

Fun fact about being friends with your old high school's librarian, she will invite you to meet authors and it will be awesome. I got to meet Adi Alsaid when he visited my alma mater. He spoke about his writing process and how Let's Get Lost came to be. I've heard a lot about it and am in love with the premise of it being told from all these different perspectives. It's pretty much about a girl named Leila and she encounters these people along her road trip to see the Northern Lights. I am really excited to dive into this book because a good contemporary is going to be a nice break from all the fantasy I'm wanting to read.

    xxxx

That's about it. I'm really looking forward to all of these books and will let you know how I favored at the end of the month/beginning of October.
