Doon by Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon

Alright lovlies, today I'm going to be talking about a wonderful book. I feel like I should start a hashtag of #SashaMadeMeDoIt because most of the books I've bought in the past year and a half have been because of her (abookutopia on YouTube) . I heard about this book from her channel and got it and fell in love with it. This book is written by two lovely ladies and is the first in a series.

Onto the plot, this is about two best friends Veronica Welling and Mackenna Reid. They are on a summer trip to Scotland and both trying to work through their own internal issues while trying to enjoy this trip to Scotland. Mackenna's Aunt Gracie's recent passing has led them to a cottage in Alloway that Mackenna spent time in as a child.

Veronica is dealing with both the recent breakup with her boyfriend and she trying to convince herself she isn't going crazy when she sees and hears a mysterious boy in a kilt calling out to her in a sexy Scottish accent.

One thing leads to another and Veronica finds an old journal written by Gracie Lockhart herself. She reads about this fantastical word that Gracie apparently claimed to spend time in. She shows it to Mackenna who doesn't believe her at first. That all changes when they are thrust into Doon. A land, according to Aunt Gracie, "outside of time and place" and they are taken to Castle MacCrae and accused of working for the Witch O' Doon, an evil witch who wants to take over the land.

Throughout this book it's one amazing thing after another. It's told from the dual points of views of Veronica and Mackenna and these writers do a phenomenal job of really diving into the characters' motives and actions and struggles and by the end of the book you just want to be their best friend.

While I was reading, a thought screamed in the back of my head "WHEN ARE JAMIE AND VERONICA GOING TO GET TOGETHER? I NEED IT NOW." And don't worry, readers, they do. The timing is perfect, they both grow in such a tremendous way that no only do they have a chemistry together but they are coming together from equal places in life.

Towards the end of the book, one of the most refreshing plots twists occurs. Veronica is now queen of Doon after sacrificing herself to save Jamie and it leaves us with this sense of "Can she do it? Can this girl from Indiana lead a magical kingdom?"

Mackenna's growth throughout this book, I felt, was a little overshadowed by Veronica's but I think that Doon was supposed to be more about Veronica's journey (especially since she's on the cover) and even though this is about Doon I will mention that the sequel Destined for Doon is more about Mackenna's journey.

Over all, I have really nothing bad to say about this book. It's written beautifully and very easy to understand and the imagery of the Doonian landscape takes my breath away. This a must read if you like fantasy, fairy tales, or fairy tale retellings. You won't regret it.
